The UN coordinator for the peace process in the Middle East, Tor Wennesland, declared that he was “alarmed” by the increase in armed clashes between Palestinians and Israeli security forces in the occupied West Bank, fueling further “fear, hatred and anger”. At least 100 Palestinians have lost their lives as a result of these clashes since the beginning of the year, according to data from the agency.

“Increasing violence in the occupied West Bank, including East Jerusalem, is fueling a climate of fear, hatred and anger. It is crucial to reduce tensions immediately to make room for crucial initiatives towards a viable political horizon,” Wennesland said in a statement.

Seven months ago, the Israeli Army intensified raids and “anti-terror operations” in the occupied West Bank in response to a wave of five attacks between March and April on Israeli soil in which 18 people were killed, which in turn has led to an increase in violent attacks by young armed Palestinians, especially in the north of the region, in the area of Nablus and Jenin.

So far this year, 114 Palestinians, including unarmed civilians such as journalist Shireen Abu Akleh and minors, have been killed in violent incidents with Israeli troops in the occupied West Bank, the highest number in the area since 2015, according to a tally by the Ministry of Defense. Palestinian health.

Just this weekend, four Palestinian teenagers were killed by Israeli shooting in various raids in the West Bank; and an 18-year-old Israeli soldier died early this morning as a victim of a Palestinian attack yesterday in the Shuafat refugee camp in East Jerusalem.

Wennesland recalls that many of these operations take place even in area A of the West Bank, administered civilly and militarily by a weakened Palestinian National Authority, and where in theory Israeli troops cannot access without permission.

“The fragility of the situation underscores the urgency of changing the dynamic on the ground, while addressing the underlying political and security issues that are fueling the current instability,” Wennesland said, urging Israeli and Palestinian authorities to “restore calm and prevent further escalation”.
