Social Democratic MEP Lydia Pereira was elected vice-president of the European People’s Party (PPE) this Wednesday, taking over the position previously held by Paulo Rangel, with another plenary session scheduled in Strasbourg next week.
Lidia Pereira, the PSD’s “number two” on the list in the last European elections in 2019, was elected unanimously, according to a statement released by the party.
Paulo Rangel was Vice-President of the PPE, but ceased to perform these functions simultaneously with those of an MEP in order to join the XXIV Constitutional Government as Minister of Foreign Affairs.
The 32-year-old economist is a member of the European Parliament’s Economic and Monetary Affairs Committee (EP) and is currently one of ten EPP vice-presidents.
There is only one plenary session left before the European elections, in Strasbourg, ahead of the European elections next week. European elections will take place from June 6 to 9 in the 27 member states of the European Union. In Portugal, voting will take place on the 9th. There are seven political groups in the European Parliament, which today consists of 705 deputies. PPE is the group with the largest representation, with 176 elected representatives.
Social Democrat Paulo Rangel was replaced in the European Parliament by Ana Miguel Santos, eighth on the list of candidates in 2019.
