About 30 former British embassy staff in Mozambique gathered outside the facility on Tuesday for a peaceful demonstration to demand compensation and social security rebates.
“20 years ago we were forcibly expelled from the embassy and we launched a trial in which we emerged victorious, but they do not want to comply with the court decision,” a representative of the commission of former employees of the British High Commission in Mozambique told Lusa Agostinho Pelemba during a protest in the center capital of Mozambique, Maputo.
At issue is the payment of alleged compensation and social security contributions to a total of 108 former embassy security officers alleged in a case dating back to 2005.
Former employees gathered outside the embassy, singing songs and holding signs with phrases such as “we are citizens of Mozambique, asking for help.”
“20 years ago there was a case that was decided in our favor. The embassy had the opportunity to appeal and [já] he did so, but in his appeal the Supreme Court upheld the decision of the first instance,” emphasized Agostinho Pelembe.
Lusa contacted the United Kingdom embassy in Maputo, which promised to comment as soon as necessary.
The former workers’ committee says demonstrations will take place every Tuesday peacefully outside the British High Commission’s headquarters in Maputo until the institution pays its alleged debt.
