“In a democracy, parties can take the initiative”: Marcelo Rebelo de Souza on Chegi’s possible criminal claim

The President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, reacted this Sunday to the possible criminal prosecution of the parliamentary group of the Chega party against him for betraying the country, saying that “this is, of course, democracy.”

“This is what democracy is. In democracy, during elections, outside of elections, parties can take the initiative. This, naturally, is democracy,” the head of state told reporters on the sidelines of a visit to Ovibeja.

Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa reacted to the news published by TVI that the Chega parliamentary group will meet on Monday with lawyers and law professors to evaluate a possible criminal case against the President of the Republic for treason, based on Article 130 of the Constitution of the Portuguese Republic.
