Bernard Hill, the actor who played the captain of the Titanic in the 1997 film starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet, died this Sunday at the age of 79. Information provided by the publication Telegraph.
In addition to the iconic role of Captain Edward Smith, Bernard Hill has also appeared in other projects such as The Lord of the Rings. Two films, The Return of the King from The Lord of the Rings and Titanic, each won 11 Oscars. The Briton also played Yosser Hughes in the TV series Black Stuff Boys.
Following the announcement of Bernard Hill’s death, several people paid tribute to him.
“He made his way onto the screen and his long career, full of iconic and notable roles, is a testament to his incredible talent. We are honored to work with Bernard on BBC. Our thoughts are with his loved ones at this sad time,” Lindsay Salt, director of BBC Drama, wrote in tribute to the actor.
“Good luck, Bernard Hill. Today people will remember his many roles, but for me Theoden King stands out as a standout role in a film series full of great performances. May his family be comforted during this difficult time.” reads a message from X’s “Nerd of Rings” account.
The father of one son, Bernard Hill had a career spanning more than three decades and was married to American actress Marianne Hill, who starred in the 1970s films El Condor, High Plains Drifter and Messiah of Evil, as well as were several television series of the time.
