Two of Feira’s PNP soldiers will be put on trial for allegedly being involved in the operation of gambling establishments located in this municipality in the Aveiro area, even serving as a doorman and “croupier”.
The indictment of the Public Ministry (MP), which Lusa saw this Wednesday, states that at the beginning of 2020, two soldiers, “in exchange for rewards and free consumption,” began helping a man who was profitably using poker cards in video games and blackjack /21 for cash at several bars he owned in Santa Maria da Feira.
According to investigators, the military warned the businessman, a co-defendant in the same case, about the checks that the GNR would conduct, and informed him about the ownership of the cars parked near his establishments in order to eliminate any possible police surveillance.
The military even assisted the businessman in profitably operating the aforementioned games, serving as gatekeepers and “dealer” on several occasions, as well as participating as poker and blackjack/21 game players.
Investigators also allege that during the Covid-19 pandemic, one of the servicemen entered one of the bars several times without reporting its operation or promoting its closure, violating the restrictions imposed at that time.
The two NTC soldiers are charged with crimes related to passive corruption, personal favoritism by an employee, aggravated unlawful access, breach of duty of secrecy, illegal gambling and illegal gambling, the latter offense being an accomplice. One of them is also charged with abuse of power, and the other with possession of a prohibited weapon.
The bar owner is charged with active corruption, aggravated trespass, breach of duty of secrecy, illegal gambling and illegal gambling.
The deputy asked to oblige military personnel removed from service to pay the state about 300 euros, which corresponds to the benefits received from criminal acts that continued until 2022.
Three more PPR Feira soldiers will be in the dock, accused of crimes related to abuse of power, influence peddling, passive corruption and possession of prohibited weapons. Investigators found that one of these soldiers had inappropriate property (not declared for tax purposes) worth almost 40 thousand euros – an amount that the deputy asked to recognize as lost to the state.
The case also involves two men and a woman accused of influence peddling and active corruption.
