Last year, the number of retired civil servants increased to 16,937.

The number of new retirees from the Caixa Geral de Aposentação (CGA) rose again in 2022 to 16,937 who left public service, up 5% from 2021.

These figures are contained in the 2022 Full Year Budget Performance Summary recently released by the General Budget Office (DGO), and include both old-age and disability pensions.

The number of civil servants who retired for old age during 2022 amounted to 15,989 people, and for old age – 948 people.

The annual number of new repairs paid for by CGA has fluctuated in recent years (after at least 8,727 new sorties in 2016), with the total for 2022 the highest since 2014, according to the same data.

The average amount of new pensions awarded in 2022 is expected to rise to approach 1,500 euros, taking into account the average amount of new pensions granted monthly during the past year, and this figure, if confirmed, will be the highest since then. The euro replaced the escudo.

It should be remembered that the average amount of pensions awarded is directly related to the type of career of civil servants retiring each year, as well as the length of the contributory career, since early retirement entails a reduction and therefore lower pensions than in the case of a “full” career.

In the last month of last year, the CGA accounted for a total of 417,828 retirements for old age and other reasons, in addition to 65,110 disability pensions. On the same date, the number of subscribers amounted to 386,216 people (against 402,099 a year earlier).

It should be recalled that from January 1, 2006, Caixa Geral de Aposentação stopped accepting new subscribers, as it became a closed regime, and civil servants admitted after this date are registered with the Social Security Service.

The statutory retirement age was 66 years and seven months in 2022 and 66 years and four months in 2023.

The usual age for accessing old-age pension varies with average life expectancy at age 65, a figure released by the National Institute of Statistics (INE), with the unprecedented decline recorded in 2023 attributed to the high death rate. among the people are elderly women during the covid-19 pandemic.

This effect of the pandemic will still be felt in 2024 and explains the continuation of the age of retirement this year without penalties compared to 2023.
