Improper waste disposal in sewers has caused dangerous microorganisms to appear in the water at several popular Malta beaches, according to the island’s water service, the Times of Malta reported on May 24.
According to the Malta Water Services Corporation (WSC), the organization responsible for the island’s sewage system, E. coli contamination of two bays (St. George’s Bay and Balluta Bay) is due to inappropriate waste disposal by from third parties in unforeseen pipes. for sewer.
“The pollution is not caused by the water company’s sewer network. “It is the result of blockages due to the actions of third parties and inadequate disposal of waste by said third parties in sewers that should not be used for such purposes,” said a WSC spokesperson.
“We have thoroughly reviewed our network and confirmed that there are no leaks in it.” the representative added.
We remind you that previously the beaches of St. George and Ballut bays were “closed” to swimming. They posted warning signs about the danger of infection. However, local residents and tourists do not heed the warning: Malta’s popular beaches are still packed with tourists.
