India is going to buy Rafale aircraft from France for an aircraft carrier

India will begin trade talks with France on the purchase of Rafale Marine aircraft this week, Hindustan Times reported on May 29, citing officials familiar with the situation.

The publication notes that it is planned to purchase 26 aircraft, intended for the first own aircraft carrier INS Vikrant. The value of the transaction is estimated at 6 billion dollars.

Indian officials, on condition of anonymity, told the publication that negotiations will begin on May 30, after the French delegation arrives in the country. The Rafale procurement will include supply of weapons, trainers, spare parts, related equipment, crew training and logistical support to the Indian Navy by the French government.

It should be noted that the Indian Defense Acquisition Council approved the Indian Navy’s proposal to purchase 26 Rafale M fighters. France responded to the Indian tender in December 2023.

The publication clarifies that the Rafale M is imported as a temporary measure to meet the needs of the Navy until India develops its own twin-engine carrier-based fighter (TEDBF). The first TEDBF prototype could make its first flight in 2026 and be ready for production in 2031.

As the publication notes, the Indian Air Force already has 36 Rafale fighters in the “land” version. Therefore, the acquisition of a naval version of the aircraft will facilitate training, maintenance and logistical support.
