The G7 will continue to support Ukraine “as long as necessary”, in the face of Russia’s “war crimes”

The leaders of G7 have threatened this Tuesday with more pressure measures on Russia after the “indiscriminate” attacks perpetrated this week on different Ukrainian citieslisted as “war crimes”and have underlined that they will continue supporting to Ukraine “as long as necessary”. The Ukrainian president, Volodimir, also spoke at the meeting. Zelenskywho has requested the sending an international observer mission to the Ukraine-Belarus border.

The forum that brings together the main powers, which has also invited the EU, has met urgently to examine the wave of attacks carried out since Monday by Russian forces. According to Zelensky, his country has been attacked with more than a hundred missiles.

“We condemn these attacks in the strongest possible terms,” ​​reads the final statement, in which Russian President Vladimir Putin is directly identified as “responsible” and calls for him to be held accountable for the atrocities committed since he ordered the invasion on February 24.

The G7 maintains a “resolute and firm” commitment to Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, which includes continuing to offer “financial, humanitarian, military, diplomatic and legal” aid. “We are committed to supporting Ukraine to meet the needs of the winter,” the leaders agreed.

They have also been “deeply concerned” about the “deliberate damage” to the Nord Stream gas pipelines as they pass through the Baltic Sea, and have supported the ongoing investigations, although they have avoided blaming Moscow for this sabotage. Instead, they have attributed to Moscow an escalation that includes the partial mobilization of reservists and “irresponsible nuclear rhetoric”, which endangers global security: “We reaffirm that any use of chemical, biological or nuclear weapons by Russia will have serious consequences,” they declared.

The role of Belarus

The final communiqué of the G7 has also included a reference to the role of Belarus, despite the fact that, according to the Bloomberg agency, this variable was not initially included in the draft. Zelensky did warn in his speech, prior to the release of the final note, of the role that Minsk plays in this entire equation.

Thus, Zelensky has proposed sending a mission of international observers to the border between Ukraine and Belarus. The President of Ukraine has argued that Moscow is trying to draw Minsk into the warwith the excuse of an alleged provocation from kyiv, which however does not plan any type of military measure against Belarus.

“At the level of the G7 and the entire democratic world, we must respond symmetrically: if Russia attacks the energy system and energy stability of our countries, we must block its energy sector with sanctions,” said Zelensky, who has also appealed, in this sense, to put an end to the “stability” of the income that Moscow obtains through oil and gas exports.
