The Mozambican National Resistance (Renamo), the main opposition party, presented this Friday to the Constitutional Council (CC) the candidacy of Ossufo Momade, the leader of this political force, to participate in the presidential elections on October 9.
Geraldo Carvalho, spokesman for Ossufo Momade’s candidacy, told reporters that Renamo had organized itself to process Ossufo Momade’s registration in time to be able to correct any irregularities.
“We are at the disposal of the Constitutional Council to eliminate any violations,” said Geraldo Carvalho.
COP President Lucia Ribeiro said the body would review the regularity of the nomination process for Ossufo Momade to allow the main opposition party to address any deficiencies in the documentation.
“As you know, once all applications have been submitted, we will review the correctness of the processes and applicants will be notified of any irregularities,” Ribeiro said.
Candidate submissions for the October 9 general election close on June 10.
Ossufo Momade already ran for President of the Republic with the support of Renamo in the 2019 elections, finishing second with 21.88% in a vote that saw Filipe Nyusi re-elected as head of state with 73% of the vote. vote.
On the 17th, Ossufo Momade was reappointed president of Renamo, the party he had led since 2019, receiving 57% of the votes at a congress held in Alto Molocue, Zambezia province, guaranteeing a new five-year term.
The ruling party, the Mozambican Liberation Front (Frelimo), has still not submitted the candidacy of its candidate Daniel Chapo to the Central Committee.
Chapo was elected as Frelimo’s candidate on the 5th of this month for the October 9 presidential elections by the ruling party’s Central Committee.
The presidential elections will be held simultaneously with legislative elections, as well as elections for governors and provincial assemblies.
The current President of the Republic and Frelimo, Filipe Nyusi, is constitutionally unable to run for office again as he is currently serving his second term as head of state after being elected in 2015 and 2019.
