UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned this Wednesday that the planet is heading towards “climate hell,” calling on world leaders to take action over the next 18 months to “create tipping points” and spare populations from disaster.
On World Environment Day, Guterres gave a speech at the American Museum of Natural History in New York and, in a “moment of truth”, revealed the climate limits the planet has already exceeded, and what companies and countries – especially what the G7 and G20 – need to do over the next 18 months to ensure a decent future for humanity.
“Today is World Environment Day. This is also the day that the European Commission’s Copernicus Climate Change Service officially reports that May 2024 is the hottest on record. This marks 12 consecutive months of the hottest months on record,” he said.
