The NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberghas called this Wednesday to the allied countries to contribute “more air defense systems” to help Ukraine to defend against new Russian attacks such as those that Vladimir Putin’s regime directed against critical civilian infrastructure in the country last week.
“The allies have provided air defense, but we need even more. We need different types of air defense: short-range, long-range, air defense systems to carry ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, drones,” Stoltenberg said, to questions. from the press, upon arrival at a meeting of NATO defense ministers in Brussels.
The allied chief has recognized the efforts made so far by some countries of the organization, and has expressly mentioned the latest announcement by Germany regarding the delivery of air defense systems to kyiv, while explaining that it is “extremely important” to continue along these lines, after the “terrible indiscriminate attacks” against the population and civil infrastructure and against the energy system.
Stoltenberg recalled that Ukraine is a large country, with many cities that may be the target of new attacks, so it is necessary for the Alliance to increase its aid to kyiv, to “defend even more” its cities.
“Protect and defend all allies”
Stoltenberg has stressed that the Alliance is a “defensive” union, which seeks to avoid conflicts and wars, so it focuses on reinforcing its “deterrence”, to make it clear to Russia that they are there to “protect and defend all allies” : “Of course, we have seen the speculations about the use of nuclear weapons underperforming in Ukraine, and we have made it clear to Russia that this will have serious consequences for Russia,” the former Norwegian prime minister warned.
“Russia knows that a nuclear war cannot be won, it should never be fought. And, of course, we are also closely monitoring its nuclear posture. We have not seen any changes, but we will remain vigilant, we will continue to monitor closely, because the threats nuclear weapons, Russia’s nuclear rhetoric and veiled threats are dangerous and reckless,” he added, reiterating the analysis he made on Tuesday.
