Brazilian police have arrested dozens of fugitives linked to the 2023 Brasilia attacks.

This Thursday, the Brazilian Federal Police (PF) launched a large-scale operation against more than 200 people accused of participating in the brutal attacks on Congress, the Federal Supreme Court (STF) and the presidential palace in Brasília on January 8, 2023. and who were released with the permission of the court but violated the conditions set by the courts. The mega-manhunt is underway in 19 of Brazil’s 27 states, with 208 targets being investigated or already found guilty of attacks aimed at ousting President Lula da Silva, who took office a week earlier, and forcing Jair’s return. Bolsonaro to power.

By 11:30 local time and 15:30 in Lisbon, the PF had managed to arrest 41 fugitives and the operation will continue throughout the day. Of the 208 people who had preventive arrest warrants issued by the STF, 107 were already considered fugitives because they did not comply with previous precautions, such as the mandatory use of an electronic bracelet, the obligation to report a desire to change address and periodic reporting to the police department.

Federal police already know that at least 60 victims are no longer in Brazil, having fled to neighboring countries to escape the sentences they were already sentenced to or those they fear they are facing. Most of them are in Argentina, where right-wing extremist Javier Miley currently presides and negotiations are underway between politicians allied with him and former President Jair Bolsonaro to grant political asylum to these fugitives.

Last week, one of Bolsonaro’s sons, federal lawmaker Eduardo Bolsonaro, was in Buenos Aires along with other far-right Brazilian politicians to ask Miley and that country’s parliament to provide safe haven for those traveling to Argentina. Politicians allied with Javier Miley are already preparing a bill that would allow these Brazilian fugitives to remain in Argentina under special conditions.

Those now being persecuted by the FN are part of the thousands of radical allies of Jair Bolsonaro who, on January 8 last year, marched to the headquarters of the three powers: executive, legislative and judicial, which they brutally invaded and destroyed. The intention was to create social and political chaos in the country and force the Armed Forces to intervene and take power, ostensibly to restore order, but with the completely unveiled intention of allowing Jair Bolsonaro to return to power, now as a dictator. , who failed in his bid for re-election in October 2022, losing the presidential election that year to Lula.
