Ecuadorian armed forces assault El Rodeo prison

The Ecuadorian prison of El Rodeo is assaulted by armed forces, Human Events reports on June 6.

On June 5, armed forces stormed the Manabí N4 detention center, known as El Rodeo prison, in Portoviejo, Manabí, searching the cells for weapons.

Recently, 79 inmates died at the prison and dozens were seriously injured.

Defense Minister Gian Carlo Loffredo said the government had established a permanent military presence in 12 of the country’s 36 prisons.

The military command has begun the fight against the “narcoterrorist gangs” that are now waging a bloody war over drug trafficking. This includes the Los Choneros and Los Lobos gangs. The army’s main focus is on operations in Manabí, as well as increased operations in Portoviejo, Guayaquil and Los Ríos.

Some 500 agents from the intelligence, investigation and prevention units of the National Police were deployed to combat the violence. Since 2021, violent conflicts in Ecuadorian prisons have led to the deaths of hundreds of prisoners.

“We are facing a very dangerous enemy, very prepared, well equipped and with great economic power.”said Loffredo.
