The year-on-year inflation rate in Germany climbed to 10.0% in September, the highest level since the reunification of the country, mainly due to high energy prices, but also food prices, as reported today by the Federal Office of Statistics (Destatis).

The president of Destatis, Georg Thiel, has added that the end of the subsidized ticket at 9 euros and the discount on fuel has increased the upward pressure on prices in September.

Thus, the consumer price index (CPI), which has remained above 7% for seven months, increased drastically compared to the 7.9% year-on-year registered in August.

Excluding the impact of energy and food, the inflation rate in September would have stood at 4.6%.
