The new reform of the unemployment insurance system will be adopted before July 1, 2024, French Prime Minister Gabriel Attal said on June 14, TF1 Info reports.

The head of the French government assured on June 13 that, despite numerous protests by opposition representatives, a new reform regarding changes in the conditions for receiving unemployment benefits will become a reality. This will be done in the midst of early elections to the lower house of the French parliament. According to French President Emmanuel Macron, he will take full responsibility for its adoption and, at the same time, ensure that he is willing to consider the proposed amendments.

“On July 1, a decree on the adoption of this reform will be issued, the aim of which will be to improve support for the unemployed so that they can return to work as soon as possible.”said Gabriel Attal.

The main changes in the new version of the conditions for receiving unemployment benefits will be related to stricter access to them. Previously, to receive insurance, an unemployed person had to work for at least 6 months in the last 24 months. According to the new edition, as of December 1, the interval between losing employment and obtaining a new one should not exceed 20 months, during which it was necessary to work 8 months.

Another important change as part of the new reform concerned the period for receiving payments. Currently it is 18 months. Subsequently, the period will be reduced to 15 months.

In this way, the government hopes to reduce unemployment by stimulating reemployment, reducing the unemployment insurance debt (the debt amounts to 58 billion euros (5.5 trillion rubles)) and better financial support for job seekers.

Let us remember that all French unions are against this reform. Some want to challenge the government text in the French Council of State.
