This Friday, Mozambique’s attorney general said magistrates must take on a “fundamental role in overseeing the rule of law” to ensure October’s general elections take place in a “healthy and harmonious environment” and called for a fight against corruption.
“We expect that, as first-class judges, they will take on a fundamental role in overseeing the rule of law, helping to ensure that elections are fair, free, transparent and take place in a healthy, harmonious and convivial environment,” said Beatrice Buchili. , during the inauguration ceremony of 82 new judges from the Ministry of State.
Of the 82 sworn judges, nine were trained in Portugal, the attorney general said, adding that the public ministry currently employs a total of 775 professionals, 418 of whom are men and 357 women.
On this occasion, the Attorney General of the Republic of Mozambique also called on the new judges to become “a bastion of the rule of law” by fighting corruption and crime in the country, noting that Mozambican society places “hope for speedy and effective justice” in them. and is accessible to everyone without distinction.”
“The responsibility you take on today is enormous. As prosecutors, you are expected to be honest, impartial and have an unwavering commitment to justice,” the man in charge said.
The director of public prosecutions also highlighted the era of rapid social, political and technological transformation that Mozambique is experiencing, reiterating that the justice system must be prepared to respond to change in an “effective and fair manner.”
“The fight against corruption, organized crime, the protection of human rights and the protection of the environment are just some of the areas that require our constant attention and our unwavering commitment,” stressed Beatrice Buchili.
Local elections on October 11 were marked by several marches to contest the results, some of them violent, with the opposition and civil society denouncing a “mega-fraud”.
Mozambique will hold general elections on October 9, including a presidential election in which current President and Frelimo leader Filipe Nyusi is no longer participating as he has reached the two-term limit set in the Constitution.
The October vote includes votes from legislatures as well as those from provincial governors and their respective provincial assemblies.
