The next UK general election, on July 4, is “the most important Westminster election in generations”the Ulster Farmers’ Union (UFU) said, the online publication Agriland reported on June 14.
The union said that the next legislature in the country will be “rotary” for farmers in Northern Ireland, and called on policy makers to do what is necessary to ensure economic, environmental and social results.
The UFU has made three demands of the next UK government. First: the annual budget to support agriculture and development in Northern Ireland should be increased in line with inflation from £330 million (37.5 billion rubles) to £389 million (44 billion rubles ).
The next government must urgently push for a UK-wide sanitary and phytosanitary/veterinary agreement with the EU. In addition, legislative targets must be introduced to protect Britain’s current domestic food production while achieving net-zero emissions in the country and harnessing the potential of renewable energy on farms.
UFU President William Irwin said: “The general election can change the direction of UK politics and ultimately determine the future of farming – and we can all influence the outcome.”.
In his words, the new government will be able to guarantee the strengthening of food security, as well as strengthen environmental protection. “by the loving hands of the men and women who till the land”. “Now is the time for our politicians to do what’s right for our farming families and help our agribusiness industry thrive in the next legislature.”“Irwin concluded.
