88% of Brazilians reject far-right and evangelical proposals that equate abortion with murder.

The vast majority of more than a million Brazilians who took part in a survey on the topic strongly reject the project proposed by the evangelical movement and far-right wings linked to former President Jair Bolsonaro, who is trying to equate abortion with murder. The very strong rejection of the project, authored by far-right MP Sostenes Cavalcante, who is linked to the controversial pastor Silas Malafaya, has surprised its defenders, who now fear negative consequences in a local election year.

Of the 1,142,953 Brazilians who participated until this Sunday in a poll published on the Chamber of Deputies’ own website, 88% said they “completely reject” the proposal. There were 918,249 votes against the proposal, compared to just 112,352 who said they “strongly supported” it, or 12% of voters.

The remaining three answer options: “I reject the majority,” “I support the majority,” or “Undecided” had virtually no votes. Combined, these three other possible answers to the question of whether to support or reject the proposal received less than 1% of the vote, so that percentage was not even considered.

According to a proposal firmly supported by the President of the Chamber of Deputies Arthur Lira, who is trying to achieve approval of the project in the blink of an eye in exchange for the support of radicals of the religious right for the name that he puts forward as his Under the successor of the President in 2025, the practice of abortion, even provided for by law for exceptional cases , will be considered a crime similar to murder. Thus, and as a result of a legal failure that some individuals and institutions already considered medieval, a woman who had an abortion after becoming pregnant by a rapist, for example, could be sentenced to up to 20 years in prison, while the perpetrator Whoever raped her will be punished with a maximum of 10.

Demonstrations in the streets across Brazil have fueled rejection of the proposal, which, if approved by parliament, could also lead to doctors who carry out a court order to perform an abortion on a girl or woman who is the victim of a sex crime being sent to prison. . Over the weekend, a senior official from the United Nations classified the bill, already dubbed the “Lawbreaker’s Law” in Brazil, as an unimaginable failure that goes against all civilizational standards in the world and puts people’s lives at risk. risk, and this Monday the OAB, the Brazilian Bar Association, also publicly criticized this proposal, which, among other things, it considered unconstitutional.
