Rain floods the town of Brinches in Alentejo

On Friday, localized heavy rainfall, accompanied by hail and thunderstorms, hit mainland Portugal. Despite no warnings from the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA), the worst-hit place was in Alentejo: the town of Brinches, population 930.

In this parish of the municipality of Serpa, rainfall in the late afternoon reached 143 millimeters per square meter in just one hour. Local streets and roads were quickly flooded and the wall collapsed, and firefighters were called on six occasions, but there were no reports of injuries.

In Alcoutim, Algarve, 23.5 mm of rain had fallen by 5pm. Tras-os-Montes was also hit by heavy rain, which flooded the streets of Sabrosa, Chaves and Valpazos.

In Trancoso, the heaviest rain fell at 14:00 – 24.5 mm per square meter. Nearby, in Satan, 19.1mm of rain was falling by 3pm.
