French far-right moves closer to majority as it joins conservatives

Marine Le Pen’s far-right party is unlikely to win an outright majority in the second round of France’s elections on Sunday, but a poll suggests it would come very close if it allies itself with the conservative Republicans.

According to a poll by the Ifop institute, Le Pen’s National Union is expected to win between 210 and 240 MPs, far short of an absolute majority in the National Assembly, which is at least 289 MPs.

The conservative party, Les Républicains, is expected to win between 25 and 45 seats, so a hypothetical total of both would be close to that majority, although at the moment that alliance does not seem very likely due to disagreements between both parties and within the Republicans over the Le Pen-Jordan Bardella formation agreement.
