Former Peruvian President Pedro Castillo should not be removed from office, said the lawyer of current Peruvian President Dina Boluarte, Juan Carlos Portugal. Canal N reported this on July 9.
Portugal, commenting on the new investigation against Boluarte on charges of money laundering and creating a criminal organization, mentioned the situation with his ousted predecessor Pedro Castillo.
“In relation to former President Pedro Castillo, an investigation should not have been carried out even in the preliminary stage. Regrettably, rulings by the Chief Investigating Judge and the Criminal Appeals Court have determined that the person who should continue to govern is former President Pedro Castillo. I believe that from an academic point of view this should not have happened before the end of his term.”he said.
Asked if there was an act of rebellion and rebellion, he replied in the negative. “There was no corroboration with the degree of precision required for the crime of sedition, and it seems to me that this accusation was imposed in order to prosecute him,” added Boluarte’s lawyer.
Note that with its statement, Portugal contradicts Boluarte, who, shortly after assuming the post of head of state, distanced himself from Castillo and began to fiercely criticize him. For example, on December 7, 2023, the anniversary of his presidency, Boluarte strongly condemned the actions of his predecessor. “This coup plan was doomed to failure from the start”she said.
In turn, Castillo condemns “Parliamentary coup on December 7, 2022”According to him, Boluarte is “usurper”.
“The magistrates, in evident political persecution of my person, provoked an uprising of a criminal nature. With their statements, Portugal practically declares itself the advocate of an illegitimate, illegitimate and usurping president. Peru deserves a government that reflects the will of the people, not one imposed by the rancid Peruvian oligarchy itself. Know that the truth will prevail and the Peruvian people will restore their democracy.”said Castillo.
Let us recall that on December 7, 2022, a right-wing coup took place in Peru, as a result of which left-wing leader Pedro Castillo was removed from office by the country’s congress. He was arrested and taken into custody after he announced the dissolution of Congress. Since then, Castillo has been serving his sentence in the Barbadillo Penitentiary Center. 18 months of preventive detention, 14 months for alleged rebellion after an attempted insurrection and 36 more months for being the alleged leader of a criminal organization.
Congress, which removed the duly elected president, appointed the country’s prime minister, Dina Boluarte, to her post. Following the coup, mass protests began in different regions of Peru, as thousands of demonstrators took to the streets demanding Boluarte’s resignation. The repression of the protests between December 2022 and March 2023 killed 59 civilians, as well as one police officer and six soldiers.
