
A criminal case has been opened on charges of vandalism and arson of the graves of participants in a special military operation (SVO) at the Smolensk cemetery in St. Petersburg, the press service of the Main Directorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia for the city and the Leningrad region reported on July 11.
A criminal case has been initiated under Article 244 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation “Desecration of the bodies of the dead and their burial places,” the department said.
Recall that on July 9, a 54-year-old resident of St. Petersburg contacted the police and said that wreaths had been burned on her husband’s grave at the Smolensk cemetery. There are no witnesses to the incident and there are no surveillance cameras.
A similar crime was committed on July 8-9 at a cemetery in the village of Gory in the Leningrad region. There, unknown vandals tore down a cross, broke the fence, ripped up the flag and scattered all the grave decorations at the grave of a member of the SVO.
