The meeting of the head of Turkey’s main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP), Ozgur Ozel, with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad was approved by the Damascus administration, Karar writes on July 10.
According to the CHP, the party leader could travel to Syria in July 2024.
“We have forwarded our request for a meeting and received a positive response from Damascus. All that remains is to determine where and when the meeting will take place.”said CHP Deputy Chairman Burkhanettin Bulut.
The publication drew attention to the fact that Ozel had previously stated that his meeting with Assad could contribute to negotiations between Ankara and Damascus, which could act as a mediator between the Syrian and Turkish leaders.
“I can convince Assad to sit down at the negotiating table with Turkey. This issue is crucial to solving the refugee problem, which is Turkey’s most pressing problem.”said the head of the Turkish opposition.
Recall that Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced a possible meeting with the Syrian president on July 7. He also indicated that he is ready to organize this meeting in his country and is committed to normalizing relations with Damascus.
