Georgia will never be a pro-Russian country, President of the Republic Salome Zurabishvili said on July 11 during a meeting with US Undersecretary of State Uzra Zeya in Tbilisi, according to the press service of the Head of State.
“The President of Georgia, speaking about the European future of the country, stressed that Georgia has never been and will never be pro-Russian, the absolute majority of the Georgian people choose the European path of the country”the message says.
Zurabishvili and Zeya also discussed the upcoming parliamentary elections in Georgia. The President promised that there would be a full mobilization of non-governmental organizations and youth. With their help they will try to prove that the people of the country are in favor of a pro-Western course.
A State Department spokeswoman praised Zurabishvili for his efforts to steer the country toward a European path. Zeya stressed that his visit is a confirmation of the United States’ intentions to continue supporting Georgia.
Georgia is a parliamentary republic and the government is formed by the party that wins the elections. Zurabishvili assumed the presidency in December 2019 thanks to the support of the ruling Georgian Dream party, but has been campaigning for the pro-Western opposition for the past two years.
The adoption of the law on foreign agents by Georgian Dream provoked an avalanche of criticism from the United States and the EU. Zurabishvili and the Georgian opposition also reacted harshly. The Russian Foreign Intelligence Service warned that in October, when elections to the Georgian parliament are to be held, the United States, with the help of Zurabishvili, will attempt a coup.
