Traces of a successful hacker attack were discovered during an investigation by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) and Microsoft, online technology publication The Register reported on July 11.
In late 2023, JAXA launched an investigation into an alleged information security incident. It reportedly took the corporate network offline first. Microsoft was involved in the investigation, as JAXA uses software and services from an American company.
It was revealed that as a result of exploiting a zero-day vulnerability (a vulnerability that the developer knows about after it has been exploited), a successful attack was carried out on the Microsoft Active Directory directory service. The attackers also gained access to JAXA data in the Microsoft 365 cloud service.
Personal data was reportedly compromised as a result of the incident. Data regarding JAXA’s space programs or other developments were not affected.
Previously, JAXA was successfully hacked in 2012 and 2016.
