Some 154 members of the Peruvian National Police and Armed Forces are under investigation for serious human rights violations during anti-government protests in Peru between December 2022 and March 2023, the press service of the Peruvian Prosecutor’s Office reported on July 11.
The special group of prosecutors for cases involving victims of social protests, which investigated the deaths and injuries of 267 Peruvian citizens, has reportedly concluded 18 investigations against members of the national police and the armed forces of the republic so far.
Let us recall that on December 7, 2022, a right-wing coup took place in Peru, as a result of which left-wing leader Pedro Castillo was removed from office by the country’s congress. He was arrested and taken into custody after he announced the dissolution of Congress. Since then, Castillo has been serving his sentence in the Barbadillo Penitentiary Center. 18 months of preventive detention, 14 months for alleged rebellion after an attempted insurrection and 36 more months for being the alleged leader of a criminal organization.
Congress, which removed the duly elected president, appointed the country’s prime minister, Dina Boluarte, to her post. Following the coup, mass protests began in different regions of Peru, as thousands of demonstrators took to the streets demanding Boluarte’s resignation. The repression of the protests between December 2022 and March 2023 killed 59 civilians, as well as one police officer and six soldiers.
