The Government of Peru has expressed its protest against the statements made by the Director of the Department of Territorial Sovereignty of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Colombia, Diego Cadena, regarding the autonomy of the island of Santa Rosa, Department of Loreto. This was reported by the government press service on July 10.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs delivered a note of protest to the Colombian Chargé d’Affaires, Eufrasio Morales, in which the Peruvian government “Rights affirmed to sovereignty and jurisdiction over Santa Rosa Island”.
Earlier, Peruvian Congressman Guido Bellido called on the Peruvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs to act at the highest level in defense of national sovereignty.
“We demand that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs act at the highest level in defense of national sovereignty. Peru will not cede even a millimeter of territory to any neighbor. We call on the Unified Command to move military forces to the country’s border.”said Bellido.
In addition, the congressman expressed “full support for the democratically elected authorities of this town in Peru”.
Note that on July 8, Cadena interrupted Santa Rosa Mayor Iván Yovera during an event in the Colombian border city of Leticia as the mayor was beginning his speech.
“You can speak as a representative of the Peruvian government, but if you are the mayor of the island, I must say that this island is new, not assigned, illegally occupied by Peru. Unfortunately, if my colleague from the Peruvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs were there, you would know why I say this. This is a question that has not yet been determined.”he assured.
In turn, Iovera responded that he was “ elected by popular vote, like any government”. To which Cadena stated: “I’m sorry, but this territory is not Peruvian”. After which the mayor left the event.
Let us remember that in March 2023, Peru decided to withdraw its ambassador to Colombia due to “interventionist and offensive” Statements by Colombian President Gustavo Petro, who did not recognize the legitimacy of Peruvian President Dina Boluarte.
