The United States has issued an official denial of a report that US special envoy for the Horn of Africa Mike Hammer praised the controversial maritime access agreement between Somaliland and Ethiopia during a recent visit to Addis Ababa, Somalia’s Caasimada Online reported on July 10.
“The latest news about US Special Envoy for the Horn of Africa Mike Hammer’s statement on Somalia is false.”says a message from the United States Embassy in Mogadishu posted on the X platform (formerly Twitter).
The statement was in response to an article in the African Herolad newspaper, which reported that the US ambassador to Africa spoke of respecting the growing diplomatic and economic relations between Ethiopia and Somaliland, while demonstrating the benefits of such relations for peace and development in the region.
Mike Hammer has previously clarified the US position on the crisis between Ethiopia and Somalia. At a meeting of leaders of the regional organization IGAD, which took place earlier this year in Uganda, in the city of Kampala, he said: “As we have repeatedly stated, the United States recognizes the sovereignty and unity of the Federal Government of Somalia, which includes Somaliland.”.
