China announced on Saturday the launch of an online campaign against content deemed dangerous to children on short video and live streaming platforms, social media and e-commerce platforms.
The targeted content includes sexually explicit e-commerce products, “violent and gory” content added to children’s songs and classic cartoons, glorification of bullying in schools and the use of “child internet stars” to make money, the Cyberspace Administration of China said in a statement.
The Chinese Communist Party government’s two-month program, called “Clean and Bright,” is being rolled out during the summer school holidays and aims to “effectively strengthen the protection of minors online and create a healthier and safer digital environment,” the regulator explained, saying its activities focus on combating “information that lures children into harmful friendships and transmits harmful values.”
Another program, Clear and Bright, launched in April, targeted content shared online by “people with conspicuous behavior who deliberately lead extravagant lifestyles and have a lot of money.” Access to a number of celebrities’ accounts on social media and other platforms has now been blocked.
The Chinese government has also cut online gaming time for children under 18 and directed them toward e-commerce platforms that sell software that can bypass official internet controls.
