Scottish salmon production rose by 13% in the first half of 2024 after two years of decline. The data from Rabobank’s report was published on July 16 by The Fish website.
“The mortality rate has become much lower. Filling the cages with larger juveniles worked.”explained banking analyst Gorzhan Nikolik.
In Canada, salmon production showed an impressive 33% year-on-year recovery in some months in the first half of 2024. This explains why US prices are consistently lower than in 2022 or 2023, despite lower imports from Chile. Nikolik added that the US has seen a decline in demand for salmon, unlike the EU, China and Brazil.
In the second half of 2024, Nikolik expects production growth in Norway and the UK.
Chilean salmon producers have been hit by the effects of the El Niño weather phenomenon: algae blooms and low oxygen levels, as well as regulatory challenges. As a result, figures for the first half of the year were down 11% year-on-year.
