Two raids were carried out at the offices of companies in Argentina that promised accelerated citizenship for Russian women arriving in the country at the end of their pregnancy, TN reports on February 14.
The country’s Federal Police carried out operations in the Buenos Aires area of Puerto Madero. Searches and eyewitness testimony led to the conclusion that managers of some local businesses falsified residence certificates, which is one of the documents required to obtain a residence permit in Argentina.
According to the source, the raided companies promoted the sale of certificates through social networks. They promised to receive a residence permit in 10-15 days, much less than the usual time.
Let us remember that six women of Russian origin in the last stage of pregnancy were detained at the Ezeiza airport, who were initially not allowed to enter the country, since they used false documents. This provoked protests by former Russian citizens residing in Argentina, which were attended by 14 people. The women went to the court and were allowed to enter.
According to data provided by the National Migration Office of Argentina, between 2022 and the beginning of 2023, 10,500 pregnant Russian citizens entered the country. In the last three months, 5,819 people have arrived, an average of 33 per day. Most of these people did not stay in Argentina. The Argentine passport allows you to enter 173 countries without a visa. The country’s press reports that Russian citizens were charged $35,000 each to quickly obtain citizenship documents.
Director of the National Migration Service Florencia Carignano on Twitter: “If we don’t start to control who we give passports to, what will happen to Argentines is that they will no longer enjoy the confidence that they have today in all countries.”
He also wrote that the Argentine migration service questioned 350 Russian women in late pregnancy as part of an investigation authorities launched due to a “significant” increase in the flow of Russian citizens into the country. One of these women is reported to have told the Argentine authorities about the possibility of obtaining a residence permit expeditiously, circumventing the sanctions imposed on Russia.
