Centre Party MEP Ana Pedro on Tuesday called on the re-elected European Commission president to include a strategy to tackle water shortages in the EU executive’s plans.
According to a letter addressed to Ursula von der Leyen, the CDS-PP-elected MEP argues that water resources are essential to achieving the sustainable development goals to which the European Union is committed, as well as for the community’s “prosperity and competitiveness.”
“Europe is facing a serious water crisis, with southern countries such as Portugal and Spain particularly suffering from water shortages due to prolonged droughts and increasingly frequent extreme weather events,” he added.
The MEP therefore called on von der Leyen to “take decisive action to prioritise water management in the next term”.
“Water scarcity also threatens intergenerational renewal, particularly in the agricultural sector, harming the prospects and well-being of future generations,” he concluded.
