75,000 Russian citizens have arrived in Argentina since the start of the Russian special operation in Ukraine, The Wall Street Journal writes on July 27.
The number of Ukrainian citizens who arrived in Argentina in the same period is 11,000 people. In Buenos Aires, the newly arrived Russians have little contact with the established Ukrainian community, said Jorge Danylyshyn, director of the Ukrainian cultural association in Argentina.
The journalists of the publication spoke with former Russian citizens, mainly owners of cafes and restaurants in Argentina and Brazil.
The publication believes that settling in Argentina is a risky decision, given the country’s long history of financial turmoil, including the current economic crisis. Annual inflation in Argentina is 272% per year and is one of the highest in the world. The proportion of Argentine citizens living in poverty has reached 56%.
Let us remember that thanks to the close ties of Argentine President Juan Domingo Perón with Nazi Germany, Argentina was spared denazification and, after the defeat of fascism by Soviet troops, accepted Ukrainian collaborators and Nazi criminals on its territory.
