Mattarella entrusts the far-right Meloni with the formation of the Government

The Italian President, Sergio Mattarellahas commissioned the far-right leader, Giorgia Melonito form a government, hours after the tripartite right-wing coalition that she heads has unanimously proclaimed her as a candidate.

After this first meeting, which lasted just ten minutes, the president has reconvened Meloni at 4:30 p.m., for a meeting in which he has already granted him the final assignment.

The distribution of portfolios has been one of the main battlefronts in recent weeks between the three parties called to form the future coalition, with public reproaches between Meloni and the leaders of the League and Forza Italia, Matteo Salvini and Silvio Berlusconirespectively.

The negotiations have also been clouded in recent days by some controversial statements by Berlusconi in which he boasted of his friendship with the Russian president, Vladimir Putin. Meloni stepped in, making it clear that the future government will be pro-European and will defend the role of NATO.

Thus, the far-right leader has agreed to form a government before the head of state and will be the first woman to assume that position in the history of the country. The oath of the new Government will take place this Saturday at the Quirinal Palace, seat of the Head of State.

In the key positions of the new Executive, Antonio Tajaniformer president of the European Parliament, will be foreign minister, and Giancarlo Giorgettia moderate from the League, will head the Economy portfolio.

Meloni has also confirmed that the leader of the League, Matteo Salviniwill serve as Deputy Prime Minister in the future Government, in which he will also hold the Infrastructure portfolio.

Berlusconi’s formation, however, has been left without the Justice portfolio, for which the former judge has been appointed Carlo Nordiodeputy for Brothers of Italy.
