The leader of the far-right Brothers of Italy, Giorgia Meloniwas sworn this morning to the position of new prime ministerthe first woman in that position in the history of the country, in a ceremony presided over by the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella.
“I swear to be faithful to the Republic, loyally comply with the Constitution and the laws, and exercise my mandate and my functions in the exclusive interest of the nation,” he said before the head of state, in the Hall of the Festivities of the Roman Palace of the Quirinal.
After signing the decree of his appointment, his two vice presidents have done the same, Matteo Salvini and Antonio Tajani, respective exponents of the far-right Liga and the conservative Forza Italia.
This government, number 68 in almost eight decades of democracy after World War II, is the most sharply right-wing that is remembered, led by the Brothers of Italy, the heir party of the post-fascist Italian Social Movement.
For example, it will have a Minister for the Family, Natality and Equal Opportunities, Eugenia Roccella, from FdI, a champion of the “pro-life” movements and a battering ram against the LGBT movement.
This Sunday will stage the transfer of powers with the outgoing prime minister, Mario Draghi, and then Meloni will preside for the first time the Minister council.
Then, predictably early next week, the investiture of the executive in the two seats of Parliament, the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies, a formalism since the right has an absolute majority.
The leaders of the European institutions have congratulated Giorgia Meloni after becoming the new prime minister and have asked her for “constructive cooperation” and to “work together” to “overcome the challenges” of the EU.
