Three Portuguese and five Chinese were detained by the Central Criminal Investigation Division of the Maritime Police during a mega operation to capture and internationally trade eels in the regions of Porto and Braga.
According to the National Maritime Administration, money, five vehicles, several kilograms of eels and materials for the conservation and trade of the species were seized. The operation is the result of an investigation and included the execution of 14 search and seizure warrants to dismantle an organized network. He collaborated with the Tactical Action Group, the Braga and Porto Maritime Police Regional Commands, the PSP, the GNR and the Institute for Nature and Forest Conservation.
The European eel, whose term “meixão” denotes the end state, is listed as a protected species, and its capture can be considered a crime that damages nature. Eight detainees will be present at the first judicial interrogation in Porto.
