With this decision, Sunak appears as a strong candidate to take over the keys to the Downing Street residence by having more than 100 support from “Tory” deputies necessary to access the primaries. The other contender, Penny Mordaunt, doesn’t have enough backing.

Former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has announced that he will not stand for re-election as leader of the Conservative Party and British Prime Minister. This afternoon the deadline for submitting applications ends and the former British Minister of Economy Rishi Sunak is the favorite to become the next head of the UK government following Truss’s resignation.
In recent days, Johnson’s name had gained strength to succeed the position. He had the necessary guarantees to present his candidacy to revalidate the presidency of the Conservative Party and, therefore, his former position as head of the Government of the country.
However, Johnson has said in a statement that, despite having the necessary support from Conservative MPs, he has concluded that “it simply would not be the right thing to do” because “you cannot govern effectively unless have a united party in Parliament”.
The former Economy Minister Rishi Sunak, for his part, has confirmed his candidacy, and appears as a firm candidate to take over the keys to the Downing Street residence by having more than 100 support from “Tory” deputies necessary to access to the primaries, while the other candidate is the leader of the conservatives in the House of Commons, Penny Mordaunt.
So far, according to the media, Mordaunt does not have sufficient support, although sources from his campaign have insisted that he will.
This Monday ends the deadline for deputies who aspire to the “tory” leadership to present their candidacies, provided they have the support of at least 100 members of the parliamentary conservative group (out of a total of 357). According to media calculations, Sunak already has the support of 154 deputies and Mordaunt just 25.
Waiting to see who those who were going to vote for Johnson will support, if Mordaunt does not get enough support, Rishi Sunak could become the new British Prime Minister today.
