Three cases of West Nile fever have been identified in Crimea and Sevastopol this year, the head of the epidemiological surveillance department of the interregional department of Rospotrebnadzor for the republic, Svetlana Listopad, announced this on Crimean radio Sputnik on August 18.
According to him, cases of the disease have been recorded in Feodosia, Bakhchisarai region and Sevastopol.
At the same time, isolated cases of the disease are detected in Crimea every year. Last year, they were discovered in the Belogorsk region and in Kerch.
The expert also said that Crimea is at risk due to its extensive fauna and ethnofauna.
“The peninsula is endemic and at risk of a range of vector-borne infections via blood and mosquito bites, including malaria.”said Listopad.
Note that the reservoir for West Nile fever is primarily birds, including waterfowl and migratory birds.
