
A magnitude 7 earthquake has struck off the coast of Kamchatka, REN TV reports on August 18.
According to residents of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, the cataclysm caused widespread destruction and panic among the population. Furniture and household items were “shaking” and houses were “rocking,” residents said.
One of the residents of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, Kristina, shared her feelings and noted that she had never experienced an earthquake of such force, and at the time of the tremors she was thinking about what things and documents to take with her in case of earthquake evacuation.
Others reported items falling off shelves and severe damage to buildings. In residential buildings, roof tiles collapsed, cracks appeared in walls and items fell off store shelves.
It should be noted that the epicentre of the earthquake was located 108 kilometres from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. Local authorities and emergency services were actively monitoring the situation, while the city’s population feared the consequences and the possibility of further aftershocks.
