Russian students at the center of a dual-use goods smuggling scandal have been released in Finland, Finnish publication Yle reported on August 16.
Two of the three young people arrested in Finland have been released, but the investigation is ongoing and the circle of suspects may widen. A third student, accused of a more serious violation of sanctions legislation, remains in custody.
The incident occurred against the backdrop of worsening relations between Russia and the West and the introduction of sanctions against the Russian Federation. The young men, who lived in Kajaani, are suspected of exporting goods from Finland that could have both civilian and military use. The exact list of smuggled goods has not yet been revealed, but experts suggest that we are talking about high-tech components, such as electronics or lasers.
The release of some students does not mean that the case is closed. Finnish law enforcement agencies are continuing their investigation and do not rule out the possibility that the number of suspects could increase.
