The UK has a new Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak. After the resignation of Lizz Trus, the Hindu has risen a step in British politics. But this name is not new in the United Kingdom, it already has a history in the country’s politics.
Behind the resignation of Lizz Trus the UK has a new prime minister Rishi Sunak. He is the first Hindu to rule the UK and the only one to have won the support of more than 100 Conservative MPs. But where does Rishi Sunak come from? What track record does he have in British politics?
The now prime minister began his steps in politics as a conservative candidate for Richmond in October 2014. In 2015 he was elected MP with a majority of 36.2% and until 2017 he was a member of the Select Committee on Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.
In 2015 he became known on the conservative right, and in 2016 he supported the Brexit referendum. Thanks to this, Boris Johnson appointed him chief secretary of the Treasury in July 2019.
In February 2020, he was appointed Chancellor of the Treasury and had to be the reassuring for lots of families who were scared by the global pandemic that was going on at the time. In March of that year, Sunak pledged to do everything in his power to help people financially damaged by the pandemic. During his time as an economy politician, he was praised for his employment protection plan during the pandemic, but he was criticized for insufficient aid to citizens.
Rishi Sunak was fined at the same time as former Prime Minister Boris Johnson for attending an illegal party during the pandemic. He was also criticized and pigeonholed for his wealth, since he could not put himself in the shoes of the public to know about his problems.
Now, he must face a historic crisis in the UK.
