A motion of censure presented against the French Government by the left has been rejected this Monday by failing to collect the necessary votesdespite the announcement by the far-right Marine Le Pen that her parliamentary group supported her.

Total, 239 deputies They have supported that motion, far from the 289 necessary to bring down the Executive of the Prime Minister, Élisabeth Borne, who in that case would have had to resign.

The French deputies must now pronounce themselves on the second motion of censurepresented this time by Le Pen’s group, which still has fewer options to get ahead, since it will not have the support of the left.

Neither motion had the support of other groups, leaving them very far from those 289 imperative votes. The left totals 151 seats and the extreme right another 89 out of a total of 577 in the National Assembly, so they needed the support of the moderate conservatives to carry them forward.

The motions of censure were presented at the end of last week, after Borne opted for approve the 2023 budgets through a constitutional mechanismarticle 49.3, which prevents debate in the National Assembly.

In exchange, the prime minister opened the door for motions of censure to be presented that, if successful, would have evicted her government.

The president, Emmanuel Macron, who lacks an absolute majority in the chambers, has threatened to call legislative elections if a motion of censure goes ahead.
