The Higher Polytechnic Institutes celebrated this Sunday the fact that 20,000 students chose these universities to continue their studies, although with an increase of only one percent compared to last year.
On the day when the results of the first stage of the national competition for access to higher education were announced, the President of the Coordinating Council of Higher Polytechnic Institutes, María José Fernández, stated that “there is a growing trend and clear signs of trust in polytechnic institutions of higher education, recognized for the quality of education and the contribution of these institutions to the country, regions and companies.”
“The signs of trust are supported by the number of students who chose the polytechnic subsystem universities as their first option,” the statement quoted in the statement added.
For María José Fernández, equally relevant is the “increase in the number of people placed in institutions located in areas with less population density,” which contributes to the economic and social development of these regions.
With the second stage of the competition, which will begin on August 26, “around 5,000 places will be available,” representing a new opportunity for students to guarantee a place on polytechnic courses, according to the Coordination Council of Higher Polytechnic Institutions, a collegial body representing the public of polytechnic higher education institutions.
Almost 50,000 students applied for the first stage of the national competition, an increase from last year, with only 14.3% of candidates not being eliminated.
Data provided by the Ministry of Education, Science and Innovation (MECI) show that nine out of 10 (87.8%) managed to introduce one of the first three options, “the highest values in recent years and one of the most relevant factors for academic success,” the guardianship emphasizes.
Of the 1,119 courses in state universities available at this stage of the competition, 815 were fully occupied, leaving 4,966 places, with the majority (76.8%) in polytechnic institutes.
