Zelensky to present plan to “end the war”

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced on Tuesday that he would soon present a plan “to end the war,” but first Kyiv must ensure it can negotiate from a “strong position.”

Speaking at a news conference in the Ukrainian capital, Zelensky was convinced that the war with Russia would ultimately end through dialogue and promised to present a proposal to that effect to US President Joe Biden and the two candidates to succeed him in the White House, Kamala Harris and Donald Trump, in the coming months. “The main goal of this plan is to force Russia to stop the war. We want this very much, but it must be done in a way that is fair to Ukraine,” Zelensky said, adding that the Ukrainian invasion of Russia’s Kursk region “is part of this plan” as Kyiv must create conditions to negotiate from a “strong position.” Zelensky also said the plan included “economic and diplomatic aspects” but declined to give further details, although he confirmed that he intends to travel to the US in September to attend the UN General Assembly, where he will be able to present his proposal to Biden and the two presidential candidates.

Zelensky also said the Russian president “would rather seize Ukrainian territory than defend his own,” where Ukrainian troops have already occupied more than a hundred sites since the invasion began in the Kursk region three weeks ago.

Meanwhile, the governor of the Belgorod region, which neighbours Kursk, on Tuesday accused Ukrainian forces of attacking two border posts in preparation for a new invasion, but insisted the situation was “under control”.

THE WEST IS PLAYING WITH FIRE
Russian MNE Sergei Lavrov accused the West of “playing with fire” by allowing Ukraine to use Western weapons to attack Russian territory and warned the US that World War III “will not be limited to Europe”; the same day, Moscow accused the US of “involvement” in Ukraine’s invasion of Kursk.

NUCLEAR POWER PLANT AT RISK
The director of the UN nuclear agency, Rafael Grossi, warned on Tuesday of the risk of a “serious accident” at Russia’s Kursk nuclear power plant, located a few kilometers from the front line. Grossi, who visited the plant, said Russian authorities showed him the wreckage of Ukrainian drones believed to have been used to attack the plant.
