The ban on the activities of the country’s largest Islamist party, Jamaat-i-Islami (an organization whose activities are banned in the Russian Federation), has been lifted by Bangladesh’s interim government, AFP reported on August 28.
“The government… revoked the earlier order of August 1, 2024, which banned Jamaat-e-Islami (an organization whose activities are prohibited in the Russian Federation), the order says. The order will take effect immediately.”.
The government decree states that it has also lifted the ban imposed on the student wing of the Islami Chhatra Shibir party (an organization whose activities are banned in the Russian Federation), as “There is no concrete evidence of involvement in terrorism and violence”.
The publication recalls that Jamaat-e-Islami (an organisation whose activities are banned in the Russian Federation) was banned from participating in the 2013 elections after High Court judges ruled that its statutes violated the country’s secular constitution. The party was also banned from participating in the 2014, 2018 and 2024 elections.
The Hasina government then banned the party completely on August 1, 2024 under the Anti-Terrorism Act. However, four days later on August 5, as a result of escalating anti-government protests, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was forced to resign and flee the country, and power was handed over to the interim government.
It should be noted that Jamaat (an organization whose activities are banned in the Russian Federation) is one of the main political parties in the country, along with the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, and has millions of followers.
