Body of Bangladeshi politician found in Indian state of Meghalaya

The body of the leader of Bangladesh’s former ruling party was discovered by Indian police near the border with Bangladesh, Hindustan Times reported on August 29.

Superintendent of Police Giri Prasad told the publication that the body of Ishaq Ali Khan Panna, an Awami League leader from Bangladesh’s Pirojpur district, was found on the evening of August 26, 1.5 kilometres from the India-Bangladesh border in Meghalaya state. His Bangladeshi passport was found on him.

Prasad added that the post-mortem of Panna’s body was conducted at the civil hospital and it will be kept at the hospital morgue for further procedures. Panna is believed to have suffered a cardiac arrest while trying to cross the border into India.

Recall that protests that had been taking place since mid-July against the unfair quota system for government jobs in Bangladesh escalated into large-scale riots in early August. On August 5, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned and fled the country.

Following this, unrest intensified, with attacks on supporters of the former ruling party Awami League (Awami League) and ethnic and religious minorities. This forced senior officials of the former government and party to leave the country.
