A bill to rename Rostov was submitted to the State Duma of the Russian Federation

On August 29, the Yaroslavl Regional Duma submitted to the State Duma of the Russian Federation a bill to rename the city of Rostov, Yaroslavl Region, to Rostov the Great. The document was published in the system of support for legislative activities of the State Duma of the Russian Federation.

“To rename the city of Rostov, Rostov district, Yaroslavl region, to the city of Rostov the Great”says the text of the bill.

The package of documents submitted to the State Duma indicates that the resolution to rename Rostov was adopted by the Yaroslavl Regional Duma on July 2. On August 22, the Russian government issued a positive opinion on the bill on renaming.

The explanatory note to the bill states that the word “Great” has been complementing the name of the city of Rostov since the 12th century. Renaming Rostov will make it possible to legally secure the name of the city “Rostov the Great”, which will fully correspond to its current status as an important historical and cultural centre.
