The difficult nuclear safety situation at the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant is a cause for concern, IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi said ahead of his visit to the plant, stressing the need to avoid a nuclear disaster at all costs, the IAEA press service said in a statement on August 29.
“Two years ago we sent our mission to the largest nuclear power plant in Europe and today its importance has only increased. Extremely alarming events have shown that the nuclear safety situation at the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant remains extremely difficult,” said the head of the IAEA.
He also stressed the importance of preventing any attack on nuclear power plants and the need to avoid a nuclear disaster during war.
In anticipation of his visit to the Zaporozhye NPP, Rafael Grossi visited the Kursk NPP and the town of Kurchatov. According to him, after his visit to the Kursk NPP, the situation there is considered serious.
Grossi stressed the critical importance of preventing a nuclear accident. In addition, the IAEA Director General is scheduled to meet with Vladimir Zelensky next week in kyiv to discuss the situation.
